A practical approach to chimney repairs
Chimneys sit in one of the most exposed parts of a house. Mortar joints, lead or other flashing details and the top of the stack all take a lot of weather. We look at the chimney as part of the roof rather than in isolation, because the source of damp can be the masonry, the flashing or the junction between the two.
Older Dublin homes often have prominent chimney stacks that have taken decades of wet and windy weather. Small cracks in mortar or tired flashing can become noticeable indoors after prolonged rain, even when the chimney still looks reasonably sound from street level.
